Aristotle on Circular Proof
نویسنده
چکیده
In Posterior Analytics 1.3, Aristotle advances three arguments against circular proof. The third argument relies on his discussion of circular proof in Prior Analytics 2.5. This is problematic because the two chapters seem to deal with two rather disparate conceptions of circular proof. In Posterior Analytics 1.3, Aristotle gives a purely propositional account of circular proof, whereas in Prior Analytics 2.5 he gives a more complex, syllogistic account. My aim is to show that these problems can be solved, and that Aristotle’s third argument in 1.3 is successful. I argue that both chapters are concerned with the same conception of circular proof, namely the propositional one. Contrary to what is often thought, the syllogistic conception provides an adequate analysis of the internal deductive structure of the propositional one. Aristotle achieves this by employing a kind of multipleconclusion logic.

متن کاملAvoiding the Void: Avicenna on the Impossibility of Circular Motion in a Void*
The topic of the void was of significant philosophical and scientific importance in the ancient and medieval world. Some, such as the atomists, maintained that the void was essential if one were to explain motion. Others, such as Aristotle, argued that the existence of the void would absolutely preclude the possibility of motion. Moreover, there were disputes concerning even how to characterize...
متن کاملAristotle on the Cause of Being and of Coming to Be
This paper considers Aristotle’s distinction between the cause of being and the cause of coming to be. It is intended to show that Aristotle is able to unify both kinds of causes on the basis of the idea that a thing’s substance is its end. He is not confused about the cause of being and of coming to be, as it might seem in several passages. The paper’s focus is on Metaphysics Zeta 17. In contr...
متن کاملOn Ternary Square-free Circular Words
Circular words are cyclically ordered finite sequences of letters. We give a computer-free proof of the following result by Currie: square-free circular words over the ternary alphabet exist for all lengths l except for 5, 7, 9, 10, 14, and 17. Our proof reveals an interesting connection between ternary square-free circular words and closed walks in the K3,3 graph. In addition, our proof implie...
متن کاملCircular Coinduction: A Proof Theoretical Foundation
Several algorithmic variants of circular coinduction have been proposed and implemented during the last decade, but a proof theoretical foundation of circular coinduction in its full generality is still missing. This paper gives a three-rule proof system that can be used to formally derive circular coinductive proofs. This three-rule system is proved behaviorally sound and is exemplified by pro...
